Friday Sew-N-Tell (Friday the 13th!!)

I can't show any projects that I am making for the holidays for my friends and family, but I can show things I made for myself for the holidays! Here is the top of an advent calendar that I have been working on.I didn't realize how crooked day 23 was until I took this picture, oh well, now you know it is homemade. I used fat quarters I got in NC and I spent about 30 minutes searching a quilt shop with my mom for an olive green color for the backing. And the yard of fabric that I "ruined" was going to be the backing of the calendar, but like I said I ruined it, so I ordered more online, and it came in yesterday. I will prewash it tonight and then get "quilting" tomorrow, and it will hopefully be done by December 1st so Charlie and I can start adventing. If anyone has any ideas on how to "quilt" this I would love to hear them. I was thinking of tying it, but haven't decided yet.
I didn't use a pattern (see reason why here) , I just based mine on a picture I found online and used almost every single scrap of fabric I had since I totally guessed about the yardage I would need. Call me crazy, I told myself I was insane at least 10 times during the making of this project.
I can't wait to see what everyone else has made over at the Sew-N-Tell.
Have a great day everyone!
Lauren

  2. I think it's fabulously wonky! read my blog...wonky is in!

I would have thought you used a pattern, it's that cute!

Quilting...why not diagonal lines? Just a thought...

Thanks for such a fun and trendy wonky Friday Finish!

  4. It looks great! The 23 looks jaunty! Not sure about quilting it - diagonal lines, like Dee, suggests, or maybe an allover loopy pattern, so you can quilt around the pockets? Thanks for sharing!

  5. What fun! Whenever I sew a top with so many squares, it just calls out "circles" for the quilting. I usually find just the right size circle around the house. Jars, cups, and plates have all been templates at my house!!

  6. How cute! I love the mix of colors. I would outline the pockets with straight lines for the quilting.

  7. Very nice ... and you will have something to treasure each year! I think I'm of the straight line school of quilting...

  8. It looks great! You are much more organised than me - an advent calendar is on the 2010 list! LOL

I would've suggested cross hatching a small diamond pattern with your backing, batting and top first before sewing on the pockets, and then outlining the pockets as you sew them on with a 1/4 foot...

But maybe just outlining the pockets? And some straight line stitching down the coloumns and rows!

It looks fabulous though! You'll have to take a photo of it filled with goodies :)!

  14. A great finish and I like the wonky 23rd. I really like advent calenders, such a great tradition. We have two in our house that my girls love and always look forward to each year.

  15. This is great! and it is better because you made your own pattern. Hey, you need not worry you tettered the 23, it's what some of us do on purpose! When a friend asked me why I slanted the square on the back of my square trivet, I told her because it was easier than trying to get it straight!
    Thanks for sharing. :-}
